FAQs
What are the hours of operation?
We see patients 8am-6pm Monday through Thursday and 8am-5pm on Fridays. We also see patients for acute illnesses on Saturday mornings. See below for how to schedule a weekend appointment.
Are there same day appointments available in the event of illness?
Yes absolutely. We have open appointment slots throughout the day.
How does one get seen on the weekend?
We see patients by appointment on Saturday mornings. If your child is sick and you would like him or her to be seen, please call us between 8:15 and 9:30am. Our staff will help you to schedule an appointment.
Will my child see "our doctor" each time?
Yes, for your well visits, scheduled problem and follow-up visits. Our pediatric nurse practitioner is also available for these types of visits and works closely with your child's regular doctor. Plan on seeing other providers for walk-in visits, or visits on days when your primary doctor is not in the office.
What happens in the hospital?
Your baby will be evaluated and cared for by specialized in-hospital providers. Generally, this amounts to one or two checkups during the first couple of days of life, with further management as needed for ill infants. These hospital based providers are well versed in neonatal care, are present in the hospital around the clock, and can be quickly summoned if needed.
What happens after the hospital?
At the time of discharge, you will be given instructions as to when you should follow up with us for the baby's first office appointment. Generally, this will be within 2 to 3 days of discharge from the hospital. Just call us and we will give an appointment time.
What happens after the first visit?
Most of the time, we will ask you and your baby to return in few days. How many days usually depends on how your baby's feeding and weight gain are going. After weight, feeding and any other newborn issues are resolved, the check up schedule is as follows: 1 mo, 2 mo, 4 mo, 6 mo, 9 mo, 12 mo, 15 mo, 18 mo, 2 years and then once a year through age 18.
Will there be shots?
Yes. In an effort to get our patients fully vaccinated by age 2, there are immunizations recommended at every well visit from 2 months through 18 months. There is further information on this website under "Resources" and "Vaccines". We are happy to address concerns and answer questions, but please be aware that we recommend and request that our young, vulnerable patients adhere to the recommended vaccine schedule. This is among the most important things you can do to keep your baby healthy.
With all the concern about antibiotic overuse and the development of resistant germs, how aggressively do you prescribe antibiotics?
It depends on the situation. As a general rule, our providers prescribe an antibiotic when there is a specific, identifiable bacterial infection to treat, such as an ear infection or pneumonia or urinary tract infection. We generally do not prescribe an antibiotic without seeing a child or, with rare exception, "just in case" and we will take time to explain to you if we believe that your child has a viral infection and antibiotics are not warranted.
What happens if I need to call for advice?
When possible, we prefer that you call during the regular weekday office hours. During those hours, one of our nurses is always available. For pressing concerns outside of regular weekday hours, our answering service will put you in touch with a triage nurse trained in pediatric telephone advice. A doctor on call can be reached on your behalf at any time, day or night, 7 days a week.
What sets Penfield Pediatrics apart from other practices in the area?
The extensive, awesome penguin mural in our office hallways! Also, we feel that the size of our practice is optimal: we are large enough to accommodate a good number of patients on a given day who need to be seen because of illness, but we are not so big that our patients feel rushed. Our fabulous nursing and secretarial staff is comprised of people who have been with us a long time, and we are like family to one another. We pride ourselves on being down-to-earth and nurturing, like our penguin mascots! And finally, our location is very convenient to those living on the east side of Rochester and the surrounding suburbs.
